Defined area. Separate, mark and manage areas for: incoming goods, storage reserves, returns, administration and break rooms for employees. Find each area in a logical position.
For example, internal goods must be placed in a door outside of main traffic, but close enough to be convenient for shipping people. Create a specific process around this area – just as each shipment is signed and even verified by a second person if the value of the shipment guarantees it.
Administrative documents and materials must be kept in a safer place than in the public back room. It must also be in an office cupboard and a lockable unit.
A place for everything. Ballpoint pens, pencils, adhesive tape, box cutters, scissors, paper, boxes, packaging materials – everything in the back room must have a designated space.
